Dear Editor:
Re: First-class law for second-hand smoke
The smoke signals from the Ontario Legislature mean a ban smoking in cars with children has been passed.
Being an ex-smoker, I understand the addiction. However, I have no sympathy for the die-hards who insist on smoking wherever they please.
It does not make sense to smoke in a confined space, like a car, with children present.
Keeping the windows open is a pretty feeble attempt to lessen the damage done to the children. I witnessed a couple who put their baby in the baby seat in the back of the car and then proceeded to light up smokes in the front seat.
Another time, I was at a home where the father was giving a baby bottle to his infant son while smoking.
Where is the common sense?
It seems that common sense is not so common, so the government has to be the “common sense police” and impose a penalty for being just plain dumb.
I hope for the sake of our children’s health that the law soon becomes official.
The fine should be greater than $250 for these inconsiderate polluters.
