Re: City to celebrate with a bang, The News, June 25
Thank you for the front-page story. The staff and the steering committee for the new evening program really appreciate your letting residents know about this year’s return of fireworks and expansion of the daytime program into evening activities.
Unfortunately, your story left out one of the most important aspects of the day’s events. It implied we raised $200,000 for fireworks, which is outrageous. We raised $50,000 for fireworks, $60,000 for the evening program and more than $100,000 to buy a refrigerated truck for Foodpath, our central food bank.
We are, as always, putting on a free day for our residents, including free shuttle buses to move people from City Hall to the Square One parking lots, which have been donated by the plaza because the stores are closed that day.
Finally, your story did not mention our request for non-perishable food donations as the price of admission.
You made it sound like we were blowing $200,000 up in smoke while people go hungry in Mississauga. That’s definitely not the case.
