October 1, 2008 04:29 PM - The father of famed Canadian ballet dancer Karen Kain has died.
Long-time Clarkson resident Charles Alexander Kain died on Sept. 26. He was 88.
The elder Kain was a member of the United Church of Canada's board of trustees since 1979 and he was involved in the construction of his Erindale church.
"He was well-respected and loved by the congregation," said Rev. Neil Young. "He will be missed."
Born in Winnipeg on Aug. 3, 1921, Kain attended the University of Manitoba to study engineering.
In his career, he rose to the position of vice president of Westinghouse Canada.
Kain also spent five years in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War.
In addition to his close ties with Erindale United Church, Kain was a tireless community worker who was involved with the Rotary Club, Big Brothers and the YMCA.
He enjoyed sailing and woodworking.
"He loved to travel, as well, and had the wisdom to take advantage of it when he could," said Young.
Kain was a long-time supporter of the World Wildlife Fund and The National Ballet of Canada, where his daughter is now the artistic director.
A private graveside service for the family took place on earlier this week at Glen Oaks Memorial Gardens.
Kain was predeceased by Winnifred, his wife of 49 years. He leaves behind his daughters Karen, Susan, Sandy and his son Kevin.
