September 24, 2008 11:50 AM - John and Bonni Titgemeyer were planning renovations to their Folkway Dr. home this year, so when they found out they could get an interest-free loan to go green, they "jumped all over it."
PowerHouse Loan Program gives residential homeowners access to zero-interest loans ranging from $2,000 to $50,000 or a rebate for installing qualifying renewable electricity generation technologies, including the solar photovoltaic panels Titgemeyer had installed on his roof over the last two months.
"In part, we did this to save energy and because of the incentive of an interest-free loan for 10 years," he said. He expects to see savings of 25 per cent on gas and electricity bills with the 10 panels he had installed. The panels transform the sun’s light into electricity that can be used in the home. Excess electricity  production can be stored in batteries or fed into the utility grid.
Homeowners who think they might be able to save some money on energy costs can attend the final meeting planned, outlining the PowerHouse Program, at Enersource Hydro Mississauga, 3240 Mavis Rd., next Tuesday, from 7 to 9 p.m. Call 416-922-2448, ext. 232 to register.
"We heard about the information meeting and went over to learn more," Titgemeyer said. "Anyone interested should do the same because dollar-wise over the years, you will save a lot of money."
The PowerHouse loans, a pilot project of the provincial government, are only available to Enersource Mississauga and Hydro One networks in Caldeon, York and Brampton.
“Our customers repeatedly ask us how they can access the green technologies that ease both their pocketbooks and their environmental footprint.” said Enersource president and CEO Craig Fleming. “This  program gives residents a terrific financial incentive to invest in renewable energy and to contribute to the culture of conservation in Ontario. It’s a win-win opportunity and we’re delighted to test the waters here in Mississauga.”
PowerHouse installations must be completed by next Feb. 15.
