August 27, 2008 02:50 PM - Mississauga's Joe Ciach is falling out of contention at the men's world tenpin bowling championships in Thailand.
After 18 games, Ciach, 42, who earlier this week was in sixth place among 330 bowlers, stands 13th overall in the running for top individual honours.
Ciach, a six-time GTA bowler of the year and seven-time member of Team Canada, sits 163 points behind the leader, Choi Bok-Eum of Korea.
Ciach will bowl six more games in the singles competition, beginning tomorrow morning. Meanwhile, Ciach and his Canadian teammates — Corey Clayton of Calgary, Jason Kovack of Windsor, David Simard of Granby, Quebec and George Lambert IV of Hamilton — finished 11th Wednesday morning in the five-man team event at the 42-lane SF Strike Bowl, located 30 minutes from Bangkok.
After combining scores in the doubles, trios, five-man and singles competition, the top 16 bowlers will qualify for the masters elimination finals.
The competition, which concludes Saturday, features the top bowlers from 56 countries.
On Monday, Ciach teamed with partners Mark Buffa of Montreal and Lambert to finish 17th in competition as a trio. The trio failed to qualify for the semi-finals by 104 points.
Last Saturday, Ciach and Simard finished 10th overall in doubles competition.
