Teen sensation getting her kicks in Mexico

The future appears to be now for Mississauga’s Jonelle Filigno.
The Dixie Soccer Club member, along with Alexandra Morton, was one of two 17-year-olds named to the Canadian national women’s team that will represent Canada at this week’s CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament.
Filigno is the youngest team member by five months, while Martina Franko is the oldest, at 32.
The team, which was announced on Sunday, left its training camp in California and flew to Juarez, Mexico, where the tournament will begin tomorrow. Canada's first match is against Trinidad & Tobago.
Filigno, who has captivated the Canadian coaching staff with her creativity and scoring prowess up front, is one of two Mississaugans named to the team.
She's joined by defender Robyn Gayle, 22, a graduate of the University of North Carolina who has represented Canada in 15 senior games.
“The 20-player roster for the tournament is an interesting mix of experience and youthful newcomers,” said Canadian head coach Even Pellerud. “The players are healthier than ever before and we feel quite well-prepared for this competition. With all the training sessions and a reasonable number of international matches this winter, this team is eager to go in and qualify Canada to the Olympic tournament in Beijing.”
Canada will have four days to rest before playing Costa Rica in the second game, on April 6.
Should the team finish first or second in its group, it will advance to the semi-finals on April 9 against one of the United States, Mexico and Jamaica from the opposite group.
Should Canada win its semi-final, it will not only advance to the April 12 final, but it will also qualify for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
