For the Mississauga resident, capturing the world in more than just black and white is thrilling.
In his first self-published book, Telling Moments, Siewrattan, 26, tackles the challenge head-on with a compilation of short stories and poetry, examining universally defining moments captured in word and prose.
"My book is a series of snapshots of mostly my life, but a lot of it is me putting myself in someone else's shoes and living through someone else's lives for a moment," said Siewrattan.
Telling Moments will be shared through the voices of Toronto's leading spoken word performers tomorrow at Cervejaria Bar & Grill in Toronto, from 7:30-10:30 p.m.
The compilation is an expression of Siewrattan's creativity, which he says is inspired by the world.
"I get my inspirations from moments," said Siewrattan. "Moments when it happens and the emotions behind them."
Siewrattan started writing when he was 13, but he didn't realize his passion for it. It wasn't until after years in college for graphic design when he took many courses in literature, creative writing and short stories that Siewrattan realized his love for writing.
"I found that not only did I have a passion to read (stories) and get involved in it, I also enjoyed writing it," he said.
Siewrattan has performed poetry readings since last January and has been a feature performer at the Cryptic Chatter and Rochdale Rhymes and Reading series. He has also earned a spot on the Toronto Poetry Slam's 2008 team and is the owner of Mississauga-based Creative Concepts Graphic & Print.
There are simple and concrete messages of hope, love and humanity sewn into every piece of his art, he says, and he looks to share these messages with the world.
