August 27, 2008 08:07 AM - An elderly Mississauga woman who was sitting on a curb watching her five-year-old grandson play last night suffered a broken leg when a car backed into her, then sped away from the scene.
Peel Regional Police say the 80-year-old victim was sitting on a curb in the parking lot of an apartment building at 1625 Bloor St. E. at about 7:30 p.m. when a car reversed out of a nearby parking spot. The apartment is located on Bloor, between Havenwood and Fieldgate Drs., near Burnhamdale Park.
The vehicle drove over one of the woman's legs, then drove away "at a high rate of speed," according to police.
The woman's screams of pain alerted a nearby resident who called 9-1-1 immediately. The woman was taken to hospital, where she was treated for a broken leg.
Const. J.P. Valade of the communications bureau of Peel Police said it isn't known if the driver's actions were intentional, or if the driver may have panicked after hitting the woman. The driver is being sought for failing to remain at the scene of the accident.
There is no description of the driver. The car was bronze in colour.
Police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to call the Peel major collision bureau at 905-453-2121, ext. 3410 or Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
