The 18-year deal, worth an estimated $1.7 billion, extends a current contract that expires next year. It will see Transcontinental print the newspaper for the majority of Ontario residents at its Mississauga plant.
Transcontinental will also print the newspaper in Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver. It will establish a new printing facility in the GTA specifically to handle The Globe and Mail work.
The location of that plant has not yet been determined.
The contract for northern Ontario is to be awarded at a later date.
"This is an historic announcement for The Globe and Mail, our readers and
advertisers, and our staff," said Phillip Crawley, The Globe's publisher and CEO. "It is a sign of our continued confidence in the future of the newspaper business.
"High-quality colour production capacity has always been a key point of
distinction for The Globe," he continued. "It means we can make the best
use of photos and graphics for our readers, and it gives our advertisers new
opportunities for high-impact creative executions."
