Seven-time Team Canada member Joe Ciach of Mississauga and his partner, David Simard of Granby, Quebec, finished fourth in their doubles squad Friday as the men's world tenpin bowling championships got underway in Thailand.
Ciach, a six-time Greater Toronto Bowler of the Year, bowled a total 1,383 points in six frames while Simard finished with 1,300 points for a combined total of 2,683.
Unfortunately for the pair, after combining the first three squads, the Canadian duo sits in seventh place, with two more squads left to compete at the 42-lane SF Strike Bowl, located 30 minutes away from Bangkok.
The top four from the combined five squads will move on to the semi-finals.
Ciach, who has earned medals at the 1997 and 2006 American Zone Championships and the 1999 Tournament of the Americas, still has a chance at a medal in the singles' competition.
The Canadian team, which is taking on the best bowlers from 56 countries, is filled out by nine-time Team Canada member George Lambert IV of Hamilton, national men’s champion Mark Buffa of Montreal, 2006 national champion Jason Kovack of Windsor, Corey Clayton of Calgary and Lucien Casagrande of Winnipeg.
The competition, which wraps up Aug. 31, involves more than 300 players.
