“It feels like a lot of hard work finally came together,” said Coe, shortly after capturing the $125,000 Jane Rogers Championship of Mississauga at Lakeview Golf Club.
“The key words are discipline and determination,” continued Coe, a native of LaQuinta, Calif., who shot a two-under-par 68 in the final round for a 72-hole total of 265 and a three-shot victory over Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask.
“I’m really happy with the way I finished,” said Coe, who struggled earlier this year and missed seven consecutive cuts on the Canadian Tour before finishing ninth at the Tour stop in Winnipeg. “I feel vindicated now. I stayed tough and today I got the job done.”
Coe, who earned $20,000 for the win, said he got fired up after the 12th hole in the final round. At that point, he was one-over-par for the day but still held the lead over Delaet.
“For some reason I got fired up after the 12th ,” he said. “I did everything. I changed gloves, I changed balls and then I said to my caddy, ‘Let’s do this.' "
The little pep talk worked because Coe birdied the par-four, 14th hole and then made an eagle at the par-five 16th when he sunk a four-foot putt.
“I didn’t quite have it today,” said DeLaet, the Montreal Open winner last week who started today’s final round two shots behind Coe. “I wish I could have put a little pressure on him (Coe) but I never really got into birdie position. I left myself a lot of 25- and 30-foot putts.”
DeLaet picked up $12,000 for his second-place finish.
George Bradford of Columbia, Maryland was alone in third place at 270 after shooting a six-under-par 64 in the final round over the 6,404-yard Lakeview course.
Dave Levesque of Georgetown, Richard Scott of Kingsville, Ont., and Liam Kendregan of Beaverton, Oregon, shared fourth place at 271.
Levesque, who got into the tournament by qualifying on Monday, when he shot an even-par 70, made a huge leap up the leader board today with the best round of the tournament. He carded a seven-under-par 63 that moved him from a six-way tie for 25th place all the way up to the fourth-place showing. He earned $5,166.
