There were tense moments on Bethune Rd., near The Collegeway and Colonial Dr., just after 8:30 p.m. as the man, who was armed with a knife, locked himself in the garage of his home after his wife, son and daughter had fled the house.
He threatened to kill himself if Peel Regional Police intervened.
According to unconfirmed reports, a man had become hysterical and threatened to kill his son after a heated argument that lasted for about 30 minutes. The man's wife called 9-1-1 to report the incident.
When the man's family escaped, he locked himself in the garage and wouldn't come out.
Just after 9:30 p.m., heavily-armed tactical officers took a man into custody.
Peel Cst. Wayne Patterson said the man was arrested without incident and was later interviewed at 11 Division.
Estelle Ervin, who lives on the street, said it's usually a quiet neighbourhood.
"This is the first time I've seen anything like this around here in years," she said. "It's a little unsettling, but it looks fairly isolated."
Ji-Yu Lay, 67, is charged with weapons dangerous and uttering death threats.
