August 20, 2008 10:02 PM - There were some intense moments in an Erin Mills community this evening when a 68-year-old man armed with a knife threatened to kill his son, and then himself if police tried to intervene.
The man's family, including his wife, son and daughter, managed to escape the home on Bethune Rd., in the area of The Collegeway and Colonial Dr., unscathed after the frightened mother phoned 9-1-1 to report the incident just after 8:30 p.m.
The man was hysterical and threatened to kill his son, whom he had been arguing with for about 30 minutes, according to unconfirmed reports.
But, when the son and the rest of the family escaped, the man locked himself in the garage and wouldn't come out.
A Mandarin interpreter with the police force arrived on scene and managed to talk him out of the home, at which point heavily-armed tactical officers with Peel Regional Police took the man into custody just after 9:30 p.m.
Peel Cst. Wayne Patterson said the man was arrested without incident and is being interviewed at 11 Division headquarters.
Police are expected to provide an update on charges Thursday morning.
Estelle Ervin, who lives on the street, said it's usually a quiet neighbourhood without many visits from police.
"This is the first time I've seen anything like this around here in years," she said. "It's a little unsettling, but it looks fairly isolated."
