August 19, 2008 02:11 PM - Mississauga's Wayne Fernandes led an all-Canadian attack this morning in Beijing, as Canada's men's field hockey team defeated South Africa 5-3 in its final round-robin match.
Down 2-1 at the Olympic Green Hockey Stadium, Fernandes, who has 157 caps with the national team, tied the game at 31 minutes, followed by a second goal at 46 minutes.
Conner Grimes of Duncan, B.C., also netted two goals while Victoria's Robert Short added one.
With the win, the Canadian squad, which features three Mississaugans, will face Belgium on Thursday for ninth place.
A ninth-place finish would be a best over Olympic result for the Canadians.
