Mark Bozzo, president of Queenscorp (Lakeview) Inc. said in an email response to the OMB ruling issued last week that the long-neglected area and the City both would have benefited from his ambitious project.
"Good planning is borderless, and it was unfortunate an imaginary municipal border seems to have made the difference in this case," Bozzo said.
He was referring to the fact that the City of Toronto recently approved a 16-storey tower less than 500 metres to the east of the Lakeview site, at the northeast corner of Lakeshore Rd. E. and Deta Rd.
The OMB ruled that the proposed condo nearby in Mississauga was, "too high, too intensive and does not provide adequate setbacks or buffers to adjacent uses."
The City opposed the site. Current designations limit development there to a four-story height.
Ward 1 city councillor Carmen Corbasson, who led council's opposition to the tower, hailed the OMB decision.
"If a developer is hoping to parachute in unreasonable heights or densities into an established community, this decision will send a strong message that it is not going to happen," she said.
Corbasson told The News earlier that the decision "gives me confidence that our policies are reasonable, logical and rational. Smart growth doesn't mean dumping ... height everywhere, especially in a very stable area like Lakeview."
