When it comes to properly storing salt for winter use on public roads, the City of Mississauga and Region of Peel meet the highest standards according to the Salt Institute, which hands out awards to those who exemplify the "best practices" in the business.
Mississauga's Clarkson works yard was one of 34 new winners of the awards for storing salt in the most appropriate environmental manner while the Mavis rds. works yard repeated its 2007 award and was recognized for "continuing excellence."
The Region of Peel's also repeated its award for its winter materials storage dome on Copper Rd. in Brampton.
“It is heartening that we have more winners this year than ever before,” noted Salt Institute president Richard L. Hanneman in announcing the awards at the annual Congress of the American Public Works Association in New Orleans, Louisiana. “These facilities are being operated to the highest standards of environmental and worker safety and are a real credit to the governments they represent. Good storage is a great investment, but it does require investment of money and management attention. These facilities are worthy to be called excellent in their operations.”
