August 15, 2008 09:49 AM - Christine Magee, whose presence on radio and television commercials has become the brand of Sleep Country Canada, will remain with the company even if a friendly $356 million takeover bid by two Canadian investment firms is executed.
Magee, a graduate of Erindale Secondary School, is the president of Sleep Country and is widely credited with helping it become the largest mattress retailer in the country since she co-founded it in 1994.
Both McGee and Stephen Gunn, the chief executive officer, have signed agreements with potential buyers, Birch Hill Equity and Westerkirk Capital, to stay on should the deal be approved by shareholders.
"The offer reflects a significant premium and a strong value for unitholders as well as providing an excellent liquidity opportunity that the board of trustees fully and enthusiastically supports", said Scott Anderson, chair of the independent committee of Sleep Country Canada Income Fund.
"Sleep Country Canada has become the leading mattress retailer in Canada as a result of its outstanding management team, reputation for customer service excellence and dedicated employees," said Steve Dent, managing partner of Birch Hill."We look forward to working with Sleep Country Canada's management to continue to grow the business", said Steve Dent, managing partner of Birch Hill.
The chain now has 133 stores across Canada and 46 in the United States. It has Mississauga locations on Argentia Rd. in Meadowvale, Plantation Place near Erin Mills Town Centre, at the Cityside Shopping centre, on Hurontario St. at Eglinton Ave., and on Dundas St. E. at Cawthra Rd.
