Mississauga drummer David MacDougall teams up with rising jazz saxophonist Ryan Oliver next week at a couple of clubs in Toronto.
MacDougall, a graduate of the arts program at Cawthra Park Secondary School, plays with Oliver Tuesday at The Trane Studio (964 Bathurst St.) and Thursday at Gate 403 (403 Roncesvalles Ave.).
Oliver is a Canadian based in New York City. His first CD, Convergence, was named one of the top 10 jazz releases of the year by editors at CODA, Canada's national jazz magazine. Oliver is studying sax with well-known American Eric Alexander at Rutgers University.
Joining MacDougall and Oliver in the trio is bassist Alex Coleman, who leads his own eight-piece group that specializes in the music of maverick bass great, Charles Mingus.
MacDougall has been busy in the studios, recording with such local artists as Stephanie Martin, George Meanwell and Donovan Woods. The University of Toronto music graduate has performed with Grammy-winning vocalist Kurt Elling and numerous other musicians, including Mississauga pianist Brian De Lima.
