Starting Sept. 2, Lufthansa Cargo will fly to the airport twice weekly from Frankfurt using MD-11 aircraft. Each flight will have capacity for about 90 tonnes of air freight.
The new agreement will be a boon for customers, said Lufthansa Cargo executive board member Dr. Andreas Otto.
"Our new service enables us to air freight customers' shipments faster non-stop to Canada and connects (the GTA) with Europe's biggest cargo airport," he said.
Greater Toronto Airports Authority president and CEO Lloyd McCoomb said the move provides more service to the area.
"This shows that the demand for additional reliable cargo service exists and confirms (the GTA's) position as the largest air freight market in Canada," said McCoomb. "We are responding to the needs of the businesses in the Toronto area that require just-in-time delivery and dependable shipping solutions."
The GTAA recently announced a 25 per cent reduction in cargo landing fees for cargo flights landing at Pearson. The reduction will take effect in the new year.
