August 12, 2008 08:09 AM - Future business leaders from a dozen countries including Northern Ireland, Norway, Indonesia, Cayman Islands, and Bahamas are in Mississauga this week for the 38th annual Canadian Junior Achievement Conference (CANJAC).
The week-long conference at University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) brings together students aged 14-19 from around the world with their peers and volunteer business leaders to explore business challenges in organized teams.
Called "Mission Responsible," the event presents delegates with specific business problems, related to sustainability, which they must address through a series of interactive workshops, general meetings and presentations with local business consultants.
"Our host university and corporate sponsors make CANJAC the business and entrepreneurial educational experience of a lifetime for Canadian and international Achievers," says Ross Maund, president and CEO of Junior Achievement of Canada. "We are excited to be shaping our future economic potential through the leadership of these young global citizens. As the most ethnically diverse city in Canada, Toronto is a world-class meeting place to inspire the world's youth to create a life that enriches us all."
Mayor Hazel McCallion welcomed the students last Saturday at the conference, which continues until Thursday. The more than 200 students attending, many of them in leading business education programs in their own countries, represent Canada, the British Virgin Islands, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka, among other nations.
"The students who attend CANJAC are considered the best and brightest from across Canada and around the world, embarking on their post-secondary ambitions with specific interest in business and related careers," the organizers said in a press release today.
The event is sponsored by a number of corporations, including Compass Group Canada, which has its headquarters in Mississauga, and Green Solutions North America Inc., which also has a location in the city.
