Man hit by van, fighting for life

Peel Regional Police officers and emergency workers were called to the intersection of Deer Run and Rathburn Rd. this morning after an elderly man was struck by a mail van as he crossed the street. The victim's empty coffee cup was all that remained at the scene after he was rushed to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto with serious head injuries.

August 6, 2008 01:27 PM - A 60-year-old Mississauga man is fighting for his life in hospital after he was struck earlier today by a Canada Post van.
Peel Regional Police Cst. Samantha Nulle said the pedestrian was hit by the van at 9:20 a.m. as he was crossing the street at the intersection of Rathburn Rd. W. and Deer Run, just east of Creditview Rd.
He was rushed to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, where he's being treated for life-threatening injuries.
According to police, the man was using the pedestrian right-of-way when he was struck by a van that was turning left onto Deer Run. The intersection is controlled by a traffic signal.
Peel police Major Collision Bureau investigators remain on the scene this afternoon.
It's the latest in a number of incidents in which pedestrians have been struck this year in Mississauga. Two pedestrians have been killed.
On July 7 in Streetsville, a 77-year-old man riding his bicycle died after he was struck by a garbage truck.
On Jan. 28, an 86-year-old woman was crossing Aquitaine Ave. after leaving Meadowvale Town Centre when she was struck and killed by a Mississauga Transit bus.
