A Mississauga student has been awarded an educational assistance scholarship to help with his studies at the University of Toronto.
William Li, who's entering his fourth year at U of T, where he's studying  engineering science and biomedical engineering, is one of 12 students around the world to receive the 2008 John W. Fisher Scholarship from Ball Corporation, a U.S.-based metal and plastic packaging supplier with more than 90 locations worldwide.
Li, whose father works at Ball's plastic packaging plant in Brampton, receives $3,000 thanks to the scholarship, which was established in 1982 to provide assistance to children of Ball employees. It's awarded to those who demonstrate academic achievement and involvement in extracurricular activities.
Li has earned a number of awards, including the Chinese Canadian Youth Achievement Award for Leadership and Community Service and the Engineering Class Award of Merit. He's also the recipient of the Miller-Thomason National Scholarship, Enbridge Scholarship in Engineering and the Queen Elizabeth II Aiming for the Top Provincial Scholarship.
