Cowdrey and fellow assistant coach Jim Jones from Leduc, Alberta, aided head coach Tom Doucette of Middle Musquodoboit, Nova Scotia, guided Canada to a silver medal performance on Sunday, at the Junior Men's World Championships in Whitehorse, Yukon.
At the Pepsi Softball Centre, after a stunning 5-3 victory over Japan in the bronze medal game, Canada lost its gold medal match 2-1 in eight innings against Australia.
Up 1-0, Canada came within one out of winning its first gold medal at the championships since 1993.
However, Australia, were in search of its fourth consecutive title, and they got it, scoring two runs in the bottom half for the win.
“It was a tough way to lose," said Douchette. "(Devon McCullough) pitched a heck of a game for us and came one pitch away from a World Championship.”
The 17-member squad featured players from coast to coast.
Team members were Derek Arsenie, Travis Dauvin, Dennis Iron, Dustin Keshane, McCullough and Terrell Walker from Saskatchewan; Dylan Cunningham, Joran Graham and Dan Mitchell from Ontario; Patrick Avery, Aaron Long and Adam Day from Nova Scotia; Shane Boland and Mike Noftall from Newfoundland; Cory Jones from Alberta; and Jessin Potskin and Darcy Walushka from British Columbia.
