Colors - Five Modern Artists runs Saturday, June 28 until Aug. 17 at the Living Arts Centre. The opening reception takes place Thursday, July 3 at Laidlaw Hall gallery, from 7-9 p.m.
The show features the works of Mississauga's Jeet Aulakh and Youngo Verma, who'll be joined by Mahirwan Mamtani (Germany), Shiv Singh (India) and Surjit Akre (India). All artists are of Indian descent.
In his artist statement, Aulakh said the goal of his work is to "initiate us into certain profound (experiences) whose possession would enable us to bring about within and around us the supreme harmony, which is the goal of our endeavours."
Verma, meanwhile, is a painter and sculptor who said he has spent the past four decades exploring the subtle and intense interface of light and dark and the presence of duality.
In the 1980s, Mamtani painted several wooden masks, wore them and had himself photographed. He painted over many of the photos with acrylic paint before moving on to figurative mask paintings depicting human emotions.
In his artist statement, Singh said his works reflect the never-ending endeavour to renew his inborn seminal touch and import into it a force, form and basic strength of the objects and their natural manifestations.
Akre, the only woman participating in the show, described her style as texturally rich, yet simple and devoid of unnecessary clutter. The artist embraces warm and subdued colours to enhance sombre moods and atmospheres.
