May 17, 2008 11:08 AM - West Credit Secondary School won big this week at the Region of Peel Secondary School Athletic Association track and field championships for special needs athletes.
But the meet, held Wednesday and Thursday at St. Marcellinus Secondary School,
was about much more than results, organizers say. Many among the 577 competitors from 37 Peel schools, including 22 in Mississauga, could be seen encouraging each other to do their best.
The meet is about participants putting in a good effort, said Siobhan Brereton, a coach at St. Martin Secondary School.
“We tell them that it doesn’t matter how they do as long as they do their best,” she said. “Everyone is so happy and what’s really important is that everyone gets acknowledged with a job well done.”
Michael Farreira, who participated in the beanbag distance throw, was excited to compete.
“I like to throw things,” said the Grade 10 student, who competed last year in the same event. “Throwing it was easy.”
West Credit Secondary, with a two-day score of 255, captured first place among the large schools.
“We started practicing in April and the highlight was that everyone got to their events in time,” said West Credit coach Nicole Bouwmester.
In other Mississauga results, St. Marcellinus placed fifth (85 points) in the large-school division while Gordon Graydon was sixth (63).
In the medium-school division, Philip Pocock was third (55) followed by Port Credit in fourth place (45).
Among the small schools, Iona was first (28), Clarkson finished second (8) and Meadowvale was sixth (4).
In the disabled division, Gordon Graydon tied for second (60).
Meet convenor Lori Yaworski said that two years ago, the event drew only 282 participants.
“It’s the incredible work from the teachers and numerous volunteers that make this great event possible," she said.
