Mayers, Team Canada go for gold

May 17, 2008 07:34 AM - Mississauga’s Jamal Mayers scored for Team Canada yesterday as they defeated Sweden 5-4 at the world hockey championships in Quebec City to earn a gold medal date with Russia tomorrow.
Mayers, who plays for the NHL’s St. Louis Blues, scored in the third period of a highly entertaining contest, putting Canada up 3-2 at the time.
Russia defeated Finland 4-0 to advance the the champonship contest, which starts at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on TSN.
Ryan Getzlaf, Dany Heatley, Rick Nash and Mike Green scored Canada’s other goals in the victory over Sweden.
Green’s goal came with Canada leading 4-3 lead late in the second period and Canada enjoying a five-on-three power play advantage. Sweden’s Niclas Wallin was in the penalty when his teammate Jonas Frogren got his stick up in the face of Mississauga’s Jason Spezza, giving him a nasty gash.
