More than 150 Bell Mobility employees set aside their desks and computers yesterday to roll up their sleeves and get busy at various United Way-funded agencies across Peel.
"We're always so busy with our regular jobs," said Vickie Lianos, an employee at Bell Mobility in Mississauga. "This was an opportunity to get away from the daily grind an help out a bit."
Lianos and her workmates took part in the ninth annual Day of Caring, where volunteers from 16 different organizations completed 27 projects at 16 United Way of Peel agencies.
"This day helps people understand the importance of volunteering," said Liz Leake, United Way's director of communications and marketing. "These events also help people understand the work of United Way and where exactly their money goes."
Bell employees were stationed at Our Place Peel, an emergency home for homeless teens, where they did painting and yard work.
"These volunteers are creating a haven for the youths, making it a bit more homey," said Leake, who noted this year's event drew the largest turnout ever. "Everyone wants to be in a place that looks good and feels comfortable.
"Thanks to the help of the volunteers, they've done that."
Agencies that benefitted from today's event include Community Living Mississauga, Erin Mills Youth Outreach, Malton Neighbourhood Services and the YMCA.
"They (agencies) usually don't have the manpower to complete a lot of tasks," said Bell Mobility's Natalie Coates. "It's pretty hard for staff to devote their time for the extras and you get a lot more accomplished as a big group."
